Collectable Satsuki Shaped Trunk Japanese Azalea Bonsai Variety: 'Hanamaiko'
Flower Colour : Deep Pink - Photographs Aug 2026
The Japanese Satsuki Azalea (Rhododendron indicum), particularly the coveted Hanamaiko variety, is celebrated as one of the most breathtaking flowering bonsai in living art. Translating roughly to "Dancing Flower," Hanamaiko blooms late in the spring—typically around late May to June—transforming the tree's fine, compact canopy into a vibrant tapestry of colour. What makes this cultivar so captivating is its variable flowering pattern: soft, delicate blossoms appear in shades of pale white to blush pink, often accented by deep raspberry pink margins, stripes, or flecks. Paired with its tiny, glossy dark-green leaves and fine, naturally twiggy ramification, a fully bloomed Hanamaiko offers a stunning, dynamic contrast against its mature woody trunk.
Maintaining the delicate aesthetic of a Hanamaiko requires attentive, acid-focused care tailored to azaleas. It thrives in morning sun with protection from intense afternoon heat, planted in acidic, highly porous soil such as pure Kanuma. Because azaleas possess fine, shallow feeder roots, consistent moisture is vital—never allow the soil to dry out completely, and water with rainwater or lime-free water to preserve acidic pH levels. Unlike most bonsai pruned early in the year, Satsuki azaleas should be hard-pruned immediately after flowering finishes in early summer, giving the tree ample time to set flower buds for the following spring without sacrificing its signature display.
